When Audrey and Joe reached out looking for a vibrant Chicago engagement adventure, they weren’t just looking for someone to snap a few portraits. They were looking for a way to capture their “joyful chaos” … the deep, expressive connection they share as a long-distance couple who finds home in shared meals, developmental economics, and genuine exploration. Audrey and Joe were so excited they flew us in from Portland to Chicago for a full series of days adventuring the city with them while photographing their story and enjoying dinners late into the night with great conversations.
Bringing the future into the frame at Lincoln Park
We began our adventure by wandering through the Lincoln Park Conservatory and the surrounding park grounds. Because nature is a core part of their story, this lush escape into the greenery felt like the most authentic place to start. Audrey and Joe are planning their 2026 wedding under a massive, 600-year-old oak tree at Adeline Farms, and these garden spots served as a perfect bridge to that vision.

As we moved toward the heart of the city, we followed our curiosity into the Chicago Cultural Center. The world-famous stained glass domes provided a backdrop that matched Audrey and Joe’s natural energy, offering a playground of light and masterful composition. We continued the journey along the Chicago Riverwalk, following the pulse of the city through the urban and park views that make Chicago so distinct.

Finding a secret world at the Thompson and North Avenue Beach
Near the end of our journey, we made our way to the Thompson Hotel to utilize a secret mural staircase. By this point, Audrey and Joe were fully in their element… loyal, goofy, and earnest. The gritty, artistic texture of the murals provided a perfect contrast to the greenery we started with. It was a moment of pure discovery that felt like a world of their own, much like the festival-style atmosphere they are planning for their wedding guests.
We eventually ended the adventure at North Avenue Beach just as the light began to turn. While the skyline is iconic, the real thrill comes from interacting with the space. We focused on the simple movement of walking, laughing, and exploring the shoreline so the photographs were a genuine memory of a sunset stroll.
