A 10-Year Love Story Set in Snow

Ashley and Jake’s Timberline Lodge winter wedding was a celebration a decade in the making. After meeting in college and moving from Minnesota to Portland, their lives together unfolded in adventurous chapters — hiking through the Redwoods, soaking in hidden hot springs near Tofino, wandering through foreign cities, even trekking the Great Wall of China.

But some of their earliest memories together were made on Mt. Hood, skiing and snowboarding side by side. “To be honest, the moment we walked through the doors of Timberline Lodge all those years ago,” they told us, “we knew exactly where we wanted to get married someday.”

That someday came in the heart of winter — with soft snow falling, a crackling fire inside, and 50 of their closest friends and family bundled up to celebrate the beginning of a new chapter.

They shared their first look just outside the lodge — the air crisp, the mountain quiet, and the moment full of emotion. Ashley surprised Jake with a beautiful custom ring, catching him totally off guard when they saw each other for the first time. Absolutely epic moment. Their ceremony took place in the Raven’s Nest, tucked upstairs in the historic lodge — its rustic timber framing and dramatic stonework setting the tone for a warm and intimate gathering.

The day flowed seamlessly. No rush, no stress – just meaningful time with loved ones in a setting that felt completely “them.” The snowflakes kept falling into the evening, adding a cinematic glow to an already unforgettable day.

1. Choose the Right Ceremony Space

For weddings under 60 guests, the Raven’s Nest is pure magic — cozy, quiet, and beautifully tucked into the historic architecture of the lodge. Its alpine character creates a warm ambiance without needing heavy decor.

2. Expect the Unexpected with Weather

We’ve seen Timberline in total white-out conditions and under golden winter sunlight. Either way, it’s gorgeous — but flexibility is key. Build extra time into your timeline and be ready for snow (boots and hand warmers are your friends).

3. Mind the Light

Winter light fades early. If outdoor photos are important to you, consider a first look in the early afternoon to make the most of the soft, glowy mountain light. Later on in the day we always love to capture night shots and there’s nothing better than when its snowing for a back lit photo with all the particles flying everywhere as you both connect and celebrate.

4. Plan for Guest Transportation

Traction tires or chains are often required in winter. Make things easier for your guests by offering shuttle service or sharing clear road condition updates in your invitations or wedding website.
