Love has a way of weaving magical moments into our lives, especially during a surprise proposal in Portland. For Joe and Jillian, their journey took an unexpected turn one beautiful evening in Portland, Oregon. Little did Jillian know that this special night at Ava Gene’s restaurant would be a milestone in their life story, as Joe had something incredibly special planned, with the help of us as discreet photographers blending into the backdrop waiting for the right moments.
Ava Gene’s, a charming and rustic Italian eatery nestled in the heart of Portland, provided the perfect backdrop for Joe’s surprise proposal in Portland. The cozy ambiance dimmed lights, and seductive aromas filled the air, heightening the anticipation for Jillian, unsuspecting. As they sat down to enjoy dinner at the nearby window, we loomed in the background hiding around corners pointing our lenses thru plants anxiously awaiting Joe to pop the question.
Moments like these are always filled with jittery nerves, but the pressure of a moment like this for us as photographers always sharpens our attention and focus. We have to commit to strategic angles and adapt to be sure to get that fraction of a second moment. Luckily one of us also committed to photographing behind a car into the window to capture the light casting on their faces. Keeping discreet is a very delicate effort, not to intrude yet get “the moment.”
Tears of joy streamed down Jillian’s cheeks as Joe slipped a ring onto her finger. It was an intimate and authentic expression, surrounded by the warmth of Ava Gene’s.
The surprises didn’t end there. After a great meal and our reveal, we ventured to Salt and Straw for some ice cream, and Mt. Tabor, a picturesque volcanic peak within Portland, served as our second location. In the tranquil surroundings, Joe and Jillian quietly wept with joy together, so beautiful.
We also adventured along the Saturday Market streets. Joe and Jillian meandered stopping from time to time to just take it all in. And finally, we meandered to Portland Waterfront Park near the fountains as they basked in the private yet powerful emotions they shared, feeling like the only two souls in the world.
These photos are so precious to witness, and we are so grateful to know Jillian and Joe. We love these surprises so much, you can really feel the emotions in each photograph.
